BLOCK was founded in 2005 by a group of creative writing students at the Australian National University. Originally intended to showcase the poetry and prose of ANU students, BLOCK has grown to include comics, photography, art and non-fiction from artists and authors all around Australia. It's published twice a year in stylin' A5 journal form, perfectly pocketsized if you have really big pockets.
BLOCK has published six issues to date, and prides itself on tackling the big issues. Like, what happens when the man you might love sends you out on a mission to catch the starfall with only two bored ghosts for company? How do you continue band practise when Mick Ronson's living on your couch? Your father's death could bring love and danger to a small town, your eyebrows should know better, and Princess Diana's wedding could be your best show and tell ever. Check out our back issues for answers to all these questions and more.
We're currently accepting submissions for our seventh issue, to be launched by a special guest in a secret place sometime in October. Details forthcoming, we promise. Make sure you read our submission guidelines for more information on how to submit your work.
We wouldn't be around without the help of ArtsACT and support from the ANU, as well as all your friendly local independent bookstores. We help run the monthly Canberra Poetry Slams at the Front in Lyneham, so if you're interested in having a chat about contributing, you can generally find us there. Otherwise drop us an email, and make sure you check out the rest of the site.
